Natural Gas Storage in Croatia

The importance and role of underground gas storage:

Underground gas storage facilities are the foundation of a safe and flexible gas supply, while their importance and role can be seen in:

1. balanced gas supply and consumption (seasonal and daily).
2. Optimum (constant) gas production
3. More favorable gas purchase (hourly dynamics of supply is equal throughout the entire year)
4. Acts as a strategic gas reserve.

The basic problem of purchase and supply for end users of gas, whether imported or from domestic production, is the appearance of daily and seasonal fluctuations in consumption, primarily concerning distribution (general consumption, that is, for households).

Gas storage in underground, geological structures - underground gas storage facilities - has been conceived so that 'excess' gas that appears in the warmer part of the year can be stored in the vicinity of end consumers in large quantities, over long periods of time and in the same state in which it is used. In this way, it can be used (entirely or partially) during the colder part of the year, when there is a "lack" of gas.

Participants on the Croatian gas market:

Podzemno Skladište Plina d.o.o. (PSP d.o.o.) is a Croatian gas storage operator that runs, maintains and develops a safe, reliable and efficient underground natural gas storage system.

Storage capacities in Croatia - PSP Okoli plant:

Working volume: 553 ×106 m3
- maximum withdrawal capacity: 240 000 m3
- maximum injection capacity: 160 000 m3/h

Average gas withdrawal from storage facility per cycle:
- in the past 5 years = 354×106 m3
- in the past 10 years = 344×106 m3
- in the past 15 years = 340×106 m3
- approx. 350 ×106 m3
